The Origin of the Visayas name

We have often heard the word Visayas or Bisaya. But do you really know the real meaning or its origin. Most of us dont, even the Bisayans themselves have no idea.

The word Visayas was derived from Srivijaya, a name of a predominantly Hindu-Buddhist empire in Sumatra.

Sri means “prosperous”, vijaya means “excellent”. It’s a Sanskrit language used in ancient India.

Anong masasabi mo? 🙂
